CLEVELAND, Ohio — Federal authorities Thursday accused a jilted lover from Northeast Ohio of delivering a bomb that exploded in front of a rival suitor.
Prosecutors in Maryland filed federal weapons charges Thursday against Clayton McCoy, 30, of Chesterland. The charges say the device blasted shrapnel into the victim’s body last fall. The victim, who was not identified, suffered serious injuries, including burns, to his chest and legs, according to a federal affidavit filed in U.S. District Court.
Magistrate Judge Carmen Henderson ordered McCoy detained without bond and transferred his case to Maryland, where federal prosecutors will try his case. His attorney for Thursday’s hearing, Darin Thompson, could not be reached for comment. A person who answered the phone at McCoy’s home declined to discuss the case.

Ohio man charged in 2020 Carroll County explosion

Federal officials charged an Ohio man in connection with an explosion in Carroll County in October. The story involves a pipe bomb explosion, role play video game and unrequited love, and it takes place in a small Carroll County town. It was an event that had frightened many around here, back in October when someone sent a package to this house and it ended up exploding when a person inside opened it, now federal agents arrested a man in Ohio with ties to the victim and his girlfriend. The house looks a lot different as construction workers put on the finishing touches. At the time after the explosion, 11 News spoke with the victim's grandmother.“I’m in the kitchen, I hear an explosion and I hear my grandson scream,” the victim’s grandmother said. Now, after an almost five month federal, multi-state and local investigation, an arrest is made.“The defendant traveled from Ohio to Maryland with the purpose and intent to unleash a dangerous explosive device on the victim,” Acting U.S. Attorney for Maryland Jonathan Lenzner said.Federal agents arrested Clayton McCoy, 30, of Chesterland, Ohio, and charged him with transporting explosives with intent to injure and using, carrying or possessing a destructive device in relation to a crime of violence.“These investigators collaborated to use forensics technology and most importantly teamwork to leave no stone unturned to ensure justice for this victim,” Tim Jones, special agent in charge for the ATF said.Watch the full news conference belowAccording to a federal affidavit, McCoy, the victim and the victim's girlfriend met through participation in Dagorhir, a live action role playing battle game.Sometime in October 2020, McCoy told the victim's girlfriend he had feelings for her, but she did not feel the same.Federal agents armed with the information believe based on forensic evidence found in McCoy's home, he constructed a pipe bomb in a package. Then according to geofence technology, a route shows his vehicle driving from Ohio to the victim's home.Nest camera video from a neighbor, while blurry, appears to show McCoy's vehicle near the home, confirming the geofence information. They said McCoy put the package on the victim's porch and left.“The pipe bomb that McCoy left for the victim contained deadly shrapnel and that shrapnel caused very serious injuries and damage to the victim’s body, as well as to the house that the victim was in when the bomb exploded,” Lenzer said."We were coming up on Christmas, and the fear of packages showing up on front porches and exploding, we got a number of calls for this. So just for the community in general, to work at the speed as these gentlemen said and come to this conclusion was extremely important, but the family and community up there are extremely relieved that we've come to this conclusion," Carroll County Sheriff Jim DeWees said.McCoy will have an initial court appearance in federal court in Ohio on Friday and will be extradited to Maryland in the coming days.
