2021-22 Federal Budget – Organics, Food Waste and Product Stewardship
The waste and resource recovery sector will benefit from new funding announced in this week’s federal budget for 2021-22.
National Waste and Recycling Industry Council (NWRIC) CEO Rose Read said it was pleasing to see new funding announced for several initiatives.
“It was good to see new funding being committed to help divert organic food from landfill and importantly, put it back into agricultural soils.
“This is a key step to addressing the National Waste Policy Action Plan target of halving the amount of organic waste being sent to landfill and reaching the 80% resource recovery rate. ....

The landfill levy for construction and demolition waste is $70 a tonne.
A typical Perth house, demolished, would incur a landfill levy of $25,000-$30,000 if not recycled. 
Rogue “recyclers” avoid charging fees that reflect this cost by stockpiling and illegal dumping. 
Honest industry players estimate it reflects a $100 million-a-year hole in state revenue.

2399 new cases of COVID-19 were reported Monday by the state Department of Health. Those numbers are over a two-day period. Monday s report showed only 1023 new cases, the lowest daily number since last October. 18 new COVID-related deaths were reported over the same two-day period. Statewide percent positivity for the seven days ending May 6 stood at 6.6-percent.
21 Pennsylvania senators are asking Gov. Tom Wolf to move up the removal of of most coronavirus restrictions. 20 of those senators are Republican. The lone Democrat is the Lehigh Valley s Lisa Boscola. The governor plans to remove all but the mask mandate on May 31st, Memorial Day. The 21 senators are pushing him to move that up to the Friday before Memorial Day, May 28th. The governor s office responds by saying those 21 senators would be better served by pushing residents to get vaccinated. ....

Grants help schools to become wise on waste


More than $37,000 in grants for Waste Wise Schools across Western Australia
Applications now open for next round of Waste Wise School grants
Nine Western Australian schools will share more than $37,000 for projects to reduce waste disposed to landfill.
Environment Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson today announced recipients of the latest Waste Wise Schools grants.
The grants will be used for a range of projects including new recycling and waste sorting systems in classrooms, promoting waste-free lunches and reducing food waste by building chicken pens and compost systems.
The Waste Wise School program is funded by the McGowan Government through the Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery Account, administered by the Waste Authority. To date, more than 197,000 students attend the 235 accredited Waste Wise Schools across WA. ....
