Rolls-Royce and Estonia-based nuclear technology startup Fermi Energia have signed a memorandum of understanding to study the potential for the deployment of small modular reactors in Estonia.
The UK company said the study will cover all aspects of deployment including grid suitability, cooling, emergency planning, human resources, licensing feasibility, economics and supply chain.
Rolls-Royce is leading a consortium that is designing a low-cost factory built SMR. Its standardised, factory-made components and advanced manufacturing processes push costs down, while the rapid assembly of the modules and components inside a weatherproof canopy on the power station site itself avoid costly schedule disruptions. ....

HARTSELLE, Ala. (WAFF) - A brush fire at a landfill has been sending smoke billowing over Hartselle for weeks.
City officials say the fire is burning deep within the brush pile, so water alone cannot put out the fire.
People who live nearby say they are not happy about the smell, or the smoke. ....

Four CQ waste companies shut down and fined $32K

Four Central Queensland waste companies were “thrown on the scrap heap” by the Queensland Government after each being fined more than $32,000 and ordered to cease operations.
Department of Environment and Science DES inspectors conducted a statewide blitz of waste operators over three months, culminating in more than $100,000 in infringement notices being issued.
A DES spokeswoman said compliance officers visited a number of Central Queensland waste companies.
“The department issued four direction notices (which require activities to immediately cease) and four penalty infringement notices – totalling $32,028,” the spokeswoman said.
The names of the businesses could not be provided, the spokeswoman said, as they had 28 days to appeal the infringement notices. ....

DUBAI Major players from across the plastic value chain in the Arabian Gulf have adopted Operation Clean Sweep (OCS) in an effort to address plastic waste, the Gulf Petrochemicals and Chemicals Association (GPCA), the voice of the chemical industry in the Arabian Gulf, announced today.
Operation Clean Sweep, a global initiative practiced in over 60 countries around the world, is aimed at eliminating plastic pellet, flake and powder loss to the environment. The initiative has gained significant momentum since its launch in the Arabian Gulf by GPCA in December last year. Waste Management has confirmed waste from New Caledonia will likely be dumped in the Dome Valley landfill should plans for the controversial facility proceed.
The issue came to light after a reader alerted
Mahurangi Matters to the fact that Waste Management holds dozens of permits from the Environmental Protection Authority that allow it to import hazardous waste from New Caledonia and French Polynesia.
The permits allow Waste Management to import numerous chemical and other forms of dangerous waste, including used lead-acid batteries, crushed fluorescent tubes, vapour sodium lamps, oils and oil sludges, alloys of mercury, solvents, and waste pesticides and herbicides, which are off-specification, outdated or unfit for their original i ....
