Entrepreneur Tanya Lee’s commitment to a healthy planet was evident when she reinvented both her fashion and textile lines into ethical, sustainable businesses.
“We don’t compete on prices, we compete on quality and consistency,” says Lee, who credits UBC Sauder School of Business for giving her the business acumen she needed to seek out solutions to turn waste into wearables.
Five years ago, Lee received a Master of Management degree from the Robert H. Lee Graduate School at the UBC Sauder School of Business, and two years ago, co-founded Lezé the Label. The e-commerce boutique sells pyjama-inspired work clothes for women, made out of sustainable fibres, such as recycled coffee grains and plastic bottles. ....

Doha: The Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) has raised concerns about wastage of food items by people. A senior official of the Ministry has urged consumers to change their behaviour to food habits to reduce food wastage.
Qatar has taken many steps to increase food production, now citizens and expatriates need to play their part in the government efforts to ensure food security, said Masoud Jarallah Al Marri, Director of MME s Food Security Department.
“I would like to send a message to consumers on the issue of food waste. The country has made tremendous efforts with the support of private sector for producing fresh food locally, now consumers have a big role to reduce food waste,” Al Marri said while speaking in a Qatar TV programme. ....

REPUBLIC Act 9003, or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Law, is now 20 years old. Approved on January 26, 2001, it was the first law signed by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo after taking over the Presidency from Joseph Estrada during the so-called Edsa-2 People Power Revolution.
Prior to RA 9003, there was no system of managing solid waste in the country. It is basically a “tapon-hakot-tambak” (throw-collect-dump) system, which is not environmentally sound. Open dumpsites are everywhere. The practice of 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycling) and composting is not institutionalized.
In the late 90s, our group, the Zero Waste Recycling Movement of the Philippines, pushed for the enactment of a law that would address solid waste. I remember joining our senior (elderly) members and fellow director Bebet Gozun (who would later become DENR Secretary) in lobbying at the Senate. One Senator even gave us the cold shoulder. ....
