State crime labs are experiencing major delays processing drug evidence

COLUMBUS – Ohio has a severe backlog of drug evidence at its state crime labs leading to longer wait times for charges to be filed and cases to be presented to grand juries.
The problem is so bad, the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation sent a letter to prosecutors statewide this month notifying them of the delays and explaining how Attorney General Dave Yost plans to fix the issue.
In the letter, Yost and BCI Superintendent Joseph Morbitzer blame the problem on Senate Bill 57 which requires the state to test for levels of tetrahydrocannabinol or THC in hemp and COVID-19.
Drug evidence that would normally be processed in about 36 days is now averaging 120 days, said Bethany McCorkle, communications director for Yost. ....

Stephen King film referenced in Ashland murderer, Michael Watson's appeal

Last week, 5th District Court of Appeals Judge William Hoffman wrote Watson s sentencing was unconstitutional, ruling Ashland County Common Pleas Court failed to take Watson s youth into consideration prior to sentencing.

ASHLAND COUNTY, Ohio (WOIO) - A 31-year-old Mansfield man is charged with inducing panic after threatening Loudonville police officers and causing the evacuation of a movie theatre.
Ashland County Prosecutor Christopher Tunnell said Rusty Allen Wisenbarger called the police department around 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 6.
Wisenbarger allegedly threatened to destroy the police station located in the 100 block of North Water Street.
Tunnell said because the police department is located in the same building as the Ohio Theater, which was showing a movie at the time, officers evacuated the building. ....
