As the end of summer break nears, many students in Hazard and Perry County are beginning to prepare for the upcoming school year. Within the next few weeks, several Back to School Bash events are scheduled to be held for students and families of both the Hazard Independent and Perry County school districts.
On Friday, July 30, Mountain After Hours Clinic will be holding a Back to School Bash from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. for all school age students. During the event, there will be giveaways, free school supplies, sports and school physicals, games and prizes, free hot dogs and drinks, a dunking booth and information tables.

The 21-year-old who grew up in Vulcan and rugby for County Central High School, is the youngest member of Canada’s women’s rugby 7s team heading to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, which take place July 23 to Aug. 8.

At its July 12 meeting, council approved a donation of $1,000 to Wardley for financial support for expenses related to her participation in the Summer Olympics.
Council directed administration to provide a formal letter of support and 100 Town pins to Wardley, and also approved the use of the outdoor screen and recreation department support for community viewing of the Olympic Rugby 7s games, as well as the purchase and placement of support signage.

This week’s weather should be pretty uneventful, but a more active weather pattern next week could cause headaches for local high schools that have graduations scheduled.
Rick Shanklin with the National Weather Service in Paducah addressed the long-range weather models available for May 21 when Christian County and Hopkinsville High School are set to hold outdoor commencement at the Stadium of Champions noting one model currently shows the potential for rain in the region though a lot can and likely will change between now and then.

A time capsule buried on the grounds of the Historic Todd County Courthouse on the Public Square was unearthed and opened Saturday and plans are being made to preserve some of 2021 and bury it for future generations.
Glen Slack is the president of Historic Todd County, Inc. and read a letter from the committee that buried the capsule for the county’s 150th anniversary half a century ago.
On hand for the capsule opening was James Groves, who led the committee that buried the capsule in 1971. He wore a necktie Saturday that he and other members wore then and one of the ties was among the items removed and inventoried during a ceremony that was streamed on Facebook Live.
