AT the opening of the HMAS Australia 11 exhibition are artist Randall Wilson, Western Port Oberon Association president Max Bryant, Commodore Greg Yorke, Victorian Maritime Centre ambassadors Heidi Victoria and Dennis Gist.

The exhibition was opened on Saturday 27 March by Victoria’s Chief of Navy, Commodore Greg Yorke.
The exhibition includes a background painting by maritime artist Randall Wilson and a documentary by Wayne Gibbs.
Two veterans that served on the ship, Petty Officer Des Shinkfield and Signalman Bruce Crowlmong, were among the 60 people at the opening. ....

It could be as simple as a note or a favorite candy bar — just a little something to let the members of the Class of 2021 know while this might be a far from ideal senior year, they are still supported and celebrated.
That is the whole idea behind the “
Valencia County Class of 2021 ‘ADOPT A SENIOR’” Facebook page. Page organizer Jessica Romero-Aragon said last year, when her son, Luke Aragon, was finishing his senior year at Belen High School amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, she came across an “adopt a senior” page from another state.
“My son, Luke, participated in that one last year and it was a really wonderful thing. He was adopted by three different families and it was real uplifting,” Romero-Aragon said. “They would send cards, little emails, inspirational quotes. A couple of months ago, I thought it would be nice to start one for Valencia County.” ....

Charles Paris, leading seaman


Charles Paris was born in Valletta in 1921. At 18, in January 1940, without his parents’ knowledge and before waiting for his conscription papers, he joined the Royal Navy as an assistant steward at the Naval Depot. After two months training, he was drafted with other Maltese cooks and stewards to the County Class cruiser HMS Sussex, which had made a brief stop at Malta on its way from South Africa to the UK.

The vessel docked in Liverpool in March for a two-month refit and then joined the Home Fleet at Scapa Flow. But the ship developed a propeller fault and proceeded to the Clyde in Scotland for repairs. On the night before it was due to leave on September 18, 1940, at about 1am, a lone German bomber dropped three bombs on Yorkhill Quay, one of which fell on the cruiser, which fully loaded with ammunition. ....
