A new ordinance that would have fined Hoboken elected officials $500 for each resident they blocked on social media failed on first reading with a 4-5 vote.
The legislation, sponsored by Council members Phil Cohen, Emily Jabbour, and Michael Russo, came about after the council members said they received complaints from residents who were blocked on Twitter and Facebook by Councilman Michael DeFusco.
The trio said the ordinance aimed to protect the First Amendment rights of constituents and ensured that council members would hear multiple opinions on any matter. ....

HOBOKEN, NJ The Hoboken City Council voted 5-4 on Wednesday night to defeat a proposal to fine Hoboken elected officials who block commenters on social media. The measure would have fined officials $500 per person whom they blocked on Facebook, Twitter, or a similar site.
The three council members who supported the measure Phil Cohen, Emily Jabbour, and Michael Russo had said it was specifically drafted after receiving complaints from residents who for years have been blocked on Twitter and Facebook by Councilmember Mike DeFusco. ....

The Hoboken City Council okayed the latest version of a Monarch settlement that will allow the city to maintain their current Department of Public Works location for up to three years, while voting down a measure that would’ve fined electeds who block constituents on social media.
