Austin Public Health: Many businesses no longer need to require masks

After closing for a month at the beginning of the pandemic, the Great Outdoors nursery reopened with strict safety measures that required employees and customers to wear masks.
Now, after the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Austin Public Health have eased mask-wearing guidance for fully vaccinated people, Great Outdoors has ended its COVID-19 protocols.
As soon as CDC made the announcement, masks were changed to optional, said Elizabeth Lane, Great Outdoors floor manager. Employees who are two weeks past their second vaccination can wear a mask if they want to, but they don t have to. Customers can decide too. ....

Austin wrestles with Abbott on masks, sets up rules to restore events

With Gov. Greg Abbott s order banning local governments from imposing mask mandates on businesses taking effect Friday, Austin and Travis County health officials on Wednesday said they were conferring with lawyers about whether even loosened local mask rules can remain.

Special permits can be granted to allow for more unmasking in crowds of 2,500 and larger, according to Escott. ....

Many Austin retailers will keep requiring masks inside stores

The CDC guidance still calls for wearing masks in crowded indoor settings such as buses, planes, hospitals, prisons and homeless shelters, but it helps clear the way for reopening workplaces, schools, and other venues even removing the need for social distancing for those who are fully vaccinated.
CDC says fully vaccinated people don t need to wear masks
“We have all longed for this moment when we can get back to some sense of normalcy,” said Rochelle Walensky, director of the CDC, said at an earlier White House briefing.
The CDC and the Biden administration have faced pressure to ease restrictions on fully vaccinated people those who are two weeks past their last required COVID-19 vaccine dose in part to highlight the benefits of getting the shot. The country’s aggressive vaccination campaign has paid off: U.S. virus cases are at their lowest rate since September, deaths are at their lowest point since last April and the coronavirus test positivity rat ....
