Denver Newsroom, Apr 28, 2021 / 14:00 pm (CNA).
Two years after bombings in Sri Lanka killed hundreds at several churches and hotels on Easter, police on Saturday arrested a former cabinet minister and his brother for alleged links to the bombings. Their attorney claimed the arrests were politically motivated.
Rishad Bathiudeen, who leads an opposition party in the Sri Lankan Parliament and formerly served in the cabinet, and his brother Reyaj were arrested in Colombo April 24 for allegedly “aiding and abetting the suicide bombers who committed the Easter Sunday carnage,” police spokesman Ajith Rohana said, according to the Associated Press. The brothers were not yet officially charged, but Rohana said there was direct evidence, circumstantial evidence, and “scientific” evidence for their involvement in the attacks. ....

'It would make a big difference': Human rights activist urges Vatican to change tack on China – Catholic World Report

CNA Staff, Apr 23, 2021 / 03:00 am (CNA).
A British human rights activist has said that it would make a “big difference” if the Vatican publicly expressed its concerns about the actions of the Chinese Communist Party.
Benedict Rogers told CNA April 21 that even a small gesture would be meaningful for those suffering as a result of Beijing’s actions both in mainland China and Hong Kong.

Rome Newsroom, Feb 3, 2021 / 05:00 am (CNA).- The Australian Federal Police said on Wednesday that it had found no evidence of criminal misconduct in its investigation into money transfers from the Vatican to Australia.
Australian authorities have been investigating the suspicious payments, equivalent to about $7.4 million, for several months.
The federal police (AFP) said in a statement on Feb. 3 that “no criminal misconduct has been identified to date.”
“If the AFP receives additional information from Australian or international partners it will be reviewed accordingly,” it said.
Local media reported last month that investigators had been unable to account for around $1.9 million in transfers from the Vatican to Australia, but that $5.4 million had been identified as being used for legitimate expenses, such as travel, wages, and pension payments. ....
