Interstate reopens after crash, hazardous materials concerns May 10, 2021 GMT CARNESVILLE, Ga. (AP) An interstate highway has reopened near after a crash and hazardous materials spill led to evacuations of nearby homes near the Georgia-South Carolina line, authorities said. Interstate 85 reopened around 8 a.m. Monday, WYFF-TV reported. The northbound lanes had been closed for more than 10 hours. A commercial vehicle overturned and leaked the chemical methyl acrylate, authorities said. The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office warned people not to come to the area as officials evacuated homes in a half-mile radius. The chemical is used to manufacture a variety of products, including textile and paper coatings, and plastic films. ....
NGTC appoints new vice president of economic development NGTC appoints new vice president of economic development Leslie McFarlin North Georgia Technical College has named Leslie McFarlin as the school’s new vice president of economic development. McFarlin, of Carnesville, has served as dean of academic affairs for the industrial technology, transportation, and public service programs at NGTC since 2018. She has been employed by the college since 2007, serving in various roles as a math instructor, Quality Enhancement Plan coordinator, and academic dean of general education, learning support, and personal services. In 2013, McFarlin was awarded the Technical College System of Georgia’s Rick Perkins Award for Excellence in Technical Instruction for NGTC and was the state runner-up for the entire college system. ....
Building on its investment in the state of Georgia, Pilgrim’s Pride Corporation announced that it plans to invest $70 million to build a state-of-the-art pet food ingredient plant in Franklin County, Georgia. The new plant will create 90 permanent, good-paying jobs in Franklin County, as well as 100 construction and trades jobs during development of the facility. Pilgrim’s estimates that the plant, upon completion, will have a $65 million annual economic impact on the region through direct and indirect spending. The project will generate more than $1 million annually in local tax revenue, helping to fund county services and local schools. The state-of-the-art pet food ingredient plant will be built on a site adjacent to Interstate 85 outside of Carnesville and will employ the most advanced technologies available to protect Franklin County’s natural resources.
