Johns Hopkins University unveiled a set of draft recommendations Monday that will lay the foundation for the next iteration of the JHU Roadmap on Diversity and Inclusion, which since 2016 has served as the university s guiding document and accountability framework for advancing equity and inclusion.
The 65 recommendations cover a range of topics faculty diversity and staff advancement, community and alumni engagement, student support and success, training and development, and institutional accountability. They were developed by the 43-member Roadmap 2020 Task Force and seven working groups made up of 162 students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community partners. ....

Johns Hopkins today announced the first steps in a new effort to recognize and more visibly celebrate the names and stories of remarkable people who are part the institution s history, with a specific focus on individuals from historically marginalized and underrepresented groups.

During the 2021 Diversity Summit, the Office of Diversity and Community Engagement unveiled the University of Mississippi’s new Pathways to Equity plan, which aims to creating a more diverse and equitable learning and working environment.
University of Mississippi officials shared the institutional commitment to strengthening a diverse and equitable learning and working environment Friday (Jan. 22) with the official launch of the university’s new Pathways to Equity strategic plan.
The plan was presented as a part of the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement’s second Diversity Summit, which also featured a keynote from Gregory J. Vincent, professor and executive director of the Education and Civil Rights Initiative at the University of Kentucky, as well as a panel discussion between Vincent and UM diversity leaders. ....

The Johns Hopkins slavery “scandal”
Historical census records show that Johns Hopkins founder of his namesake university in Baltimore, Maryland was a slave-owner, university officials announced on December 9, in an open letter. The revelation has been seized on to generate a racialist campaign at Johns Hopkins University, site of the nation’s leading medical college.
The open letter, entitled
“Reexamining the history of our founder,” states that university officials received a tip from a Maryland state archivist about the existence of the census records in the spring. A team of university historians followed up on the tip and found “government census records that state Mr. Hopkins was the owner of one enslaved person listed in his household in 1840 and four enslaved people listed in 1850. By the 1860 census, there are no enslaved persons listed in the household.” Additional documents from the 1830s showed that Hopkins sometimes purchased slaves to settle ....
