The Arkansas Society United States Daughters of 1812 held its first virtual state council and elected new state officers to serve for the next three years.
New officers elected were President Jerrie Townsend, Vice President Katherine Kate Schindler, Chaplain Patricia McLemore, Secretary Judith Robbins, Treasurer Charline Manning, Registrar Arvetta Swift, and Historian Frances Frankie Ochsner. The officers are members of three of the four chapters in the state, according to a news release. ....

.- John Andrew Herdeg, age 83, passed away peacefully in his sleep at home on Sunday, June 27, 2021. Born in Buffalo, NY on September 15, 1937, son of Franklin Leland and Susannah Estelle Clark Herdeg, John spent his youth in Gowanda, NY. He graduated from Deerfield Academy, Princeton University and The University of Pennsylvania Law School. In 1961, John married his lifetime love, Judith (Judy) Coolidge Carpenter, moved to Connecticut and joined the Connecticut Bar while working in New York City as an assistant to the Trustee of the bankrupt New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad. Bill Replacing 'Confederate Flag Day' with 'Arkansas Day' Fails Senate Committee

A bill that would have replaced the state’s existing Confederate Flag Day with a newly-created Arkansas Day failed in a Senate committee Monday.
House Bill 1916 fell one vote short of the needed five in the Senate State Agencies and Governmental Affairs Committee to advance to the full Senate. Members voted 4-3 for it, with one member not voting.
The bill, which passed in the House over a week ago with a vote of 80-7, would have replaced Arkansas’ Confederate Flag Day, which occurs the Saturday before Easter Sunday each year, with Arkansas Day.
In presenting the bill to the Senate committee, Rep. Austin McCollum, R-Bentonville, spoke on the origins of Confederate Flag Day and how it was not established right after the Civil War, but instead was passed in the late 1950s during the civil rights movement. He also responded to claims that removing Confederate Flag Day would be erasing history. ....
