Pride Month, Juneteenth recognized by the Cohasset Select Board

Wicked Local
In their final convention of June, the Cohasset Select Board formally recognized two events which had recently been celebrated in town.
The Select Board proclaimed retroactively for this year and henceforth that Cohasset would recognize the holiday of Juneteenth, and the entire month of June at Pride Month locally.
Juneteenth was formally recognized as a federal holiday earlier this month when President Joe Biden signed a bill establishing it as such.
Massachusetts followed suit, and Select Board Chair Keri Thompson said she was thrilled for Cohasset to do the same.
“I lived in Texas for grad school, and I remember first hearing about Juneteenth there because it’s widely celebrated in Texas,” Thompson said. “I had never heard of it growing up in Massachusetts, but I really got to know how wonderful this holiday is living in Texas, and I think it’s great that our country is choosing to recognize it.” ....

Youngstown minister seeks peace through prayer, fasting

The Rev. Lewis W. Macklin
Juneteenth is now a federal holiday that has been long celebrated on June 19 to commemorate the emancipation of enslaved people in America.
The holiday was first recognized in Galveston Texas, where on that date in 1865, in the aftermath of the Civil War, enslaved people received the notification that they were declared free under the terms of the 1862 Emancipation Proclamation.
While we celebrate and commemorate, let’s commit to educate and enlighten ourselves as to the importance of this new national holiday. On the occasion of Juneteenth, please enjoy the Hairspray’s rendition “I Know Where I ve Been” performed by Cliffe College of Creative Arts & DANA School of Music at Youngstown State University’s Jaron LeGrair and Voices of YSU accompanied by Jack Ciarniello. ....

DENVER Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the end of slavery in the United States signed into law by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863.
On June 19th in 1865, General Gordon Granger led Union soldiers to Galveston, Texas with news that the Civil War and slavery had ended. That’s when slaves in Texas had learned they were free, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.
The observance started in Galveston Texas in 1865 and is now celebrated nationwide.
“It meant the freeing of the slaves,” said 108-year-old Denver resident Easter Hampton Butler. ....
