Vancouver businesses relieved cruise travel will resume, even with caveats


 
VANCOUVER
Businesses and municipal governments on both sides of the Salish Sea are relieved the federal government will lift its cruise ship ban in November, even though it comes with pandemic-related fine print.
Vancouver Mayor Kennedy Stewart, Tourism Vancouver and a local business improvement association describe Thursday s announcement that cruise ship travel will resume on Nov. 1 as welcome news, despite outstanding questions regarding visitors coming to Canada and exactly how COVID-19 cases could impact operations.
This is fantastic news and another sign we re starting to put COVID behind us, though we still have to be cautious,” said Stewart. “This is going to get a lot of people back to work in a tourism industry that s just been hit so hard.” ....

New vision for Gastown narrows roads for pedestrian spaces, relocates Steam Clock


“Changes to calm traffic, define places to gather, and create a robust pedestrian network, expand the area, quality and variety of social spaces in Gastown. This is an enticement for visitors, workers and residents to spend more time in Gastown and may have a positive effect on individual and community well-being, as well as, support for local businesses,” reads the study.
“Creating spaces that can easily host events with minimal or no traffic disruptions, provides more opportunities for Gastown residents, organizations, and businesses to express their identities through activities in the public realm. This in turn may help energize Gastown’s sense of community and distinct character.” ....

Revitalize Gastown's alleys as business hubs: Vancouver urban study

There has been a lot of talk about Gastown coming out of Vancouver city hall over the last decade, but not much action. So the Gastown Business Improvement Society decided to do its own urban design study.
It was released Friday. Among its recommendations: Activating and animating Gastown’s alleys by opening businesses in them, installing artwork and/or plants, and maybe cutting down on the giant garbage bins.

“We’re in talks with the city, businesses and residents about whether we can have more of a central waste system,” said Walley Wargolet of the improvement society. “Can we get away from having 25 bins in each of the alleyways to make them more palatable to people walking through them?” ....
