Avalanche claims life of Clearwater doctor

The town of Clearwater is mourning the death of one of its doctors following an avalanche in the Trophy Mountains.
Dr. Ifor Thomas, 48, died Wednesday. He, Robert Beaudry, 47, and Tony Lifely, 53, were skiing in the backcountry that morning when the avalanche swept them up.
A devastated Beaudry said Thursday the avalanche knocked him unconscious and covered the trio with snow. He was buried for 20 to 30 minutes with only a pocket of air to keep him alive.
I was buried there for a long time, he said, his voice quiet.
No one would be alive today had they not come prepared, Beaudry said. One of Lifely s arms was not buried by in the snow. He managed to reach for a shovel and dig himself out. Beaudry and Thomas had avalanche beacons, which was the only reason Lifely could find and rescue them. ....

“There s never been logging,” Howard said. “It s definitely old growth in the valley bottoms. It s still intact, that s the main thing.”
But that may soon change. Maps distributed to Raush stakeholders and shared with the Goat, show a proposal by Prince George-based Carrier Lumber to build roads through one of the protected areas to access unprotected forests further into the watershed.
Current land use terms restrict the protected areas from resource development, but allow road-building.
The potential development has triggered push back from some local residents. ....
