Today marks the 51st anniversary of Earth Day. During the next two weeks, several organizations in Kodiak are hosting events aimed at cleaning up the environment around the island.  On Friday, the Island Trails Network, in collaboration with the Sunâaq Tribe of Kodiak and Alaska Sea Grant, will host a cleanup event at Buskin Beach from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Parking fees will be waived for volunteers who do not have a parking pass. On Saturday, Island Trails Network will team up with AmeriCorps for a cleanup at Gibson Cove from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Volunteers will need to bring their own gloves, but trash bags will be provided. ....
Local chef and food truck owner Diane Million stood in the Island Air hangar at Kodiak Benny Benson State Airport Wednesday morning wondering what to do with the platters of salad, lasagna and garlic bread she had brought to feed Elders in Larsen Bay. She had made the food â lasagna slathered in sauce, trays of sliced bread and greens from BrightBox Farms â in her food truck, Million Recipes, the previous day. But on Wednesday, the flight meant to deliver the food to the Elders for lunch was cancelled because of 40 mph winds in Larsen Bay, which would make it difficult for the pilot to land. ....
Some Kodiak residents have asked the Kodiak City Council to conduct a feasibility study to explore possible uses for property sitting idle at Gibson Cove. Local fisherman Nate Rose, who is also part of a working group looking to turn the property into a multiuse facility for kelp and other fisheries processing, officially requested a feasibility study from the council at a work session on Tuesday. The goal of the study would be to âbetter understand the capabilities and potential uses and/or limitations of the proposed property,â he said in a letter to the council. According to Rose, the study could help inform which grants might be available to fund the redevelopment of the site. ....
