Seeking Protection in a Pandemic: The Impact of COVID-19 on Asylum
Border restrictions put into place during the pandemic have severely limited the ability of people fleeing violence and persecution to ask for protection. A recently-released study by the Jesuit Refugee Service and Georgetown University’s Institute for the Study of International Migration, Seeking Protection in a Pandemic: COVID-19 and the Future of Asylum, analyzed the impact of COVID-19 restrictions on asylum
processes in the US and other countries. Drawing on the experiences of JRS field staff, the study looks particularly at restrictions on asylum in the US, Mexico, Colombia, Australia, the European Union and South Africa. Jesuit Refugee Service/USA and Jesuit Refugee Service Latin America and the Caribbean applaud President Biden for signing a series of Executive Orders that begin the process of restoring and rebuilding the US refugee and asylum systems, especially for those displaced within our own hemisphere. These steps follow other refugee and immigration-related actions taken by President Biden on his first day in office.
“The amount of damage done to the US refugee and asylum systems over the past several years has been significant. We welcome the Biden Administration’s continued focus on these important issues and encourage them to take swift action to address policies that have caused undue harm to those seeking safety and protection,” said Giulia McPherson, Director of Advocacy & Operations, JRS/USA. ....
