Grantham schoolgirl inspired to start litter-picking

Grantham schoolgirl inspired to start litter-picking
A Grantham schoolgirl has started litter-picking in Little Ponton after being inspired by a school pal.
Seven-year-old Elsie Wright, a pupil at Belton Lane Primary School, took matters into her own hands by clearing the streets of rubbish.
She was inspired by fellow pupil George who was so dismayed at the amount of litter on his first walk to school last September that he spent an afternoon picking it all up.

A school spokesperson said: “This story inspired us to start weekly litter picking events around our local area. We purchased a class set of litter pickers. We have received many positive comments from local residents thanking us for the work.” ....

A schoolgirl has received a personal reply from Buckingham Palace after sending a get well card to the Duke of Edinburgh.
Five-year-old Matilda Harper, of Long Bennington, wanted to do something to try and make Prince Philip smile after she saw that he was in hospital.
Mum Rachel said: “Matilda saw the news of the “old man” and asked who he was. We told her it was the Queen’s husband Prince Philip and he was 99 but very poorly. Obviously she was then worried he might have Covid, but we reassured her that he was only a little poorly and needed a sleepover in hospital to get better. ....

Family member heartbroken’ after window visit denied at Grantham care home
Published: 14:00, 03 April 2021
A family member of a Grantham care home resident has been left ‘heartbroken’ after having been reportedly denied a window visit with her loved one on several occasions.
Sophie McGuffie’s 84-year-old grandmother has been a resident of Maple Leaf Lodge in Grantham for almost 12 years.
Since care homes closed to visitors last March, Sophie and her family tried to maintain regular visits, in any capacity.

Sophie said: “This has been difficult, as although [Maple Leaf Lodge] put a visiting pod in place in December, the booking availability only allows visits once every seven to 10 days for 30 minutes. In between pod visits, we have attempted to see her through her bedroom window on several occasions, only to be asked to leave.” ....

We need to learn lessons of the past year and build upon community spirit

We need to learn lessons of the past year and build upon community spirit
Column by Councillor Martin Hill, leader of Lincolnshire County Council
As I write this article, sitting in the warm spring sunshine, it is impossible not to feel a strong sense of optimism for the future.
Yes, we have been through a torrid twelve months with many lives lost, livelihoods and jobs threatened and our whole way of life turned on it’s head.

But thankfully, due to the very successful rollout of vaccines, of which I have been a grateful recipient (and very impressed by the efficiency and great spirit of the staff and volunteers), we are at last coming out of a long dark tunnel. ....

We have a bright future but no room for complacency

We have a bright future but no room for complacency
Column by Councillor Lee Steptoe, Labour member of South Kesteven District Council
As spring blooms in a typically British way, with extremes of weather, we can at last see a light flickering increasingly brightly at the end of the Covid tunnel.
I cannot wait to enjoy a beer in a pub garden (weather permitting) and eat again in my favourite Indian restaurants in our town. As I wrote in my last column, I have had the first jab due to my age and underlying heart disease and feel so much more positive for it. I want to thank our amazing NHS and its legions of workers once again; you truly are loved across our nation. ....
