Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra denied claims by North Carolina officials who said the Biden administration was seriously considering opening an emergency facility to house unaccompanied migrant children in the state.
Rep. Richard Hudson, a North Carolina Republican, asked Becerra in a hearing before the House Energy and Commerce Committee on Wednesday about a
Washington Examinerreport that the Biden administration had reached out to Greensboro officials about housing as many as 800 children at a boarding school property in a residential neighborhood.
“There is no plan that we have to show for children in North Carolina. We are always looking for sites where we can provide the type of safety and security that children need, and we have sites throughout the country, but there is no plan I can tell you right now to shelter children in North Carolina,” Becerra said. ....

GREENSBORO — The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is considering using the site of the former American Hebrew Academy as a relocation center for unaccompanied immigrant children as they await reunion with family members in the U.S.
Melvin Skip Alston, chairman of the Guilford County Board of Commissioners, said Thursday that HHS officials came to Greensboro Tuesday to inspect the dormitory and classroom buildings at the academy campus to consider whether it would be suitable.
Alston said he is not sure when the government will make a decision, but such a center would have a big impact on Greensboro. ....

The Biden administration is in talks with city officials in Greensboro to open an overflow shelter that would hold hundreds of unaccompanied migrant children who have come across the southern border, according to the city.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is eyeing the American Hebrew Academy, a shuttered international boarding school, as its next site to hold up to 800 children, city officials revealed.
“On Tuesday, May 4, both City and County officials met with representatives from the US Department of Health and Human Services to conduct a site assessment of the American Hebrew Academy facility at 4334 Hobbs Rd. The facility is one of several sites across the country identified as unused property for potential use as a temporary influx housing for unaccompanied children,” the city of Greensboro said in a statement on Thursday. ....

Hamilton will headline at the Steven Tanger Center for the Performing Arts from Apr. 6-24 in 2022, Greensboro Mayor Nancy Vaughan announced Tuesday. Despite premiering in 2015, Hamilton ranks just outside the top-10 of highest-grossing Broadway musicals of all time, according to Playbill.
