The dominant story of 2020 is the ongoing pandemic from COVID-19.
Adair County reported its first case on March 21, a person who had recently returned to Kirksville from Chicago. As of writing in late December, more than 1,660 cases have been reported and seven county residents have died from the virus.
The economic impacts from the virus and that order saw unemployment rise in the area, just as it did across the country. Adair County had 4.5 percent unemployment in March, which increased to 7 percent in April. The county stayed around that rate for the summer, when there is usually more unemployment already. ....

The Adair County Health Department is organizing its follow-up clinic for those that received the initial COVID-19 vaccines in December. 
Individuals who received those vaccines must register for a second dose, which will be given next week. The department started those registrations Monday.
In a new release, Jim LeBaron, administrator for the department, said they completed 150 registrations before noon. Two phone lines have been created to take registration calls. Those numbers are 660-730-6100 and 660-730-6200, and will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. until Friday. ....

Twelve service members died on overseas deployments to designated combat zones in Africa, Kosovo and the Arabian peninsula region, including waterways, in 2020.
One other soldier was killed in a terrorist attack in Kenya, which is not a designated combat zone.
The most deadly of the incidents was a helicopter crash in the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt in November, in which five American troops died and one was injured. The Americans were part of an international peacekeeping force that monitors compliance with the 1979 Israeli-Egyptian peace accord.

Dr. Glenn Wehner Inducted into Gelbvieh Hall of Fame

Dr. Glenn Wehner of Rocking GV Gelbvieh in Kirksville, Missouri, was inducted into the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) Hall of Fame during the awards presentation at the AGA Virtual Annual Meeting  Dec. 4, 2020.
The AGA Hall of Fame recognizes individuals for lasting contributions to the growth and development of the Gelbvieh breed. Hall of Fame inductee selection requirements include contributions to breed promotion efforts, leadership provided to the association, and the breeding of superior genetics that are of great influence within the Gelbvieh and Balancer® cattle population.
Dr. Wehner, one of the earliest AGA members, was an agriculture science professor at Truman State University, Kirksville, Missouri, where he introduced hundreds of students to the Gelbvieh breed. He holgd a Ph.D. in animal nutrition. He developed the first Gelbvieh herd maintained by Truman State University, as well as his own fullblood Gelb ....
