MILWAUKEE Like in the rest of the U.S., the 20th century in Wisconsin was a time of major change and major growing pains.
More Black residents than ever before would move into the Badger State during this era. But when they arrived, they’d find a place that still systematically denied them equal rights and opportunities.
Over the course of the century, Black Wisconsinites would have to fight tooth and nail to earn the same rights that their neighbors were given freely. Here, we take a look at the persistent issues of segregation and prejudice that faced Black residents at this time and the Civil Rights Movement that helped bring about hard-earned progress. ....

This is part two of a four-part series exploring the history and struggles Black Wisconsinites have endured. 
MILWAUKEE As the 19th century rolled around, Wisconsin was just figuring out its future.
Well, technically, Wisconsin wasn’t Wisconsin yet  it was a chunk of land handed over to the brand-new United States. American settlers, including Black residents, were starting to flow into the future Badger state, seeking out land or opportunity.
These new residents would grapple with questions of freedom and abolition, civil rights and political power. Here, we take a look at how Black Wisconsinites navigated the 19th century in their young state  ​ and the lasting, sometimes contradictory, effects of the era. ....

Why were Sun Prairie sixth-graders asked how they would punish a slave? District still mum on origin of lesson.

Two days after a Sun Prairie middle school faced backlash for an activity that asked sixth-grade students how they would punish a slave, the district isn’t answering questions on where the lesson came from and why it was taught.
The Sun Prairie School District on Monday issued an apology, put the group of Patrick Marsh Middle School teachers responsible for the lesson on leave and launched an investigation into the incident, but has been largely quiet since.
District spokesperson Patricia Lux said in an email Wednesday that there has been “in-person support work” with the students who were given the assignment, but the district has not responded to repeated requests for comment on the origin of the lesson. ....
