SPOKANE, Wash. The Washington Department of Corrections announced it is considering closing 18 living units at 12 correction centers across the state due to the declining prison population.
DOC Communications Director Jacque Coe said several factors have led to significant unused capacity in its facilities. She said at least 3,600 of the DOC’s more than 18,000 beds are empty as of Thursday. ....

In Nashville, North Carolina, a Nash County jail guard was arrested Monday after being caught trying to smuggle suboxone into the jail. Guard Chaka Johnson was found with Suboxone, a drug used to treat opioid dependence, on him as he arrived at work. He is charged with possession of a controlled substance in a prison/jail premises.
In North Port, Florida, a North Port Police civilian employee was arrested Tuesday after being found in possession of numerous controlled substances. Former Forensic Supervisor Tracy Gold, 48, got caught with 17.8 grams of hydromorphone, 35 grams of oxycodone, and 19.2 grams of hydrocodone, as well as small amounts of alprazolam, triazolam and tramadol. She is facing six felony counts, four for illegal possession of prescription pills and two for having enough pil ....

Legislature moves to resentence up to 114 people serving life without parole under Washington’s three-strikes law

A decadeslong effort came to fruition Wednesday when the Legislature passed a bill to resentence as many as 114 people serving life without parole under Washington’s three-strikes law.
Headed to Gov. Jay Inslee’s desk after a close vote in the House, Senate Bill 5164 affects those who “struck out” at least in part because of a second-degree robbery conviction, relating to a crime that generally involves no weapon or physical injury.
While such a conviction will no longer be considered a strike, whether people will remain in prison for some length of time would depend on what a judge decides based on the sentencing range for their convictions. ....
