More than 800 people were able to get their first dose of the coronavirus vaccine on Wednesday at Gardner-Webb University.
The college hosted a vaccination clinic for students and community members this week, putting shots in the arms of 809 people, 350 of which were students.
It s a good day for us, for our community, said William Downs, Gardner-Webb president.
Gardner-Webb announced its intention to return to a pre-COVID environment as much as possible next school year. Getting students vaccinated, Downs said, is indispensable for that vision.
We ve got to attack this thing aggressively. If we simply waited until July or August as we were poised to open the doors, it would be too late. We ve got to turn the corner right now. This is the day to make that happen, he said. ....

About 350 Gardner-Webb University students signed up for COVID-19 vaccine appointments at its Boiling Springs campus Wednesday afternoon.
The clinic, which the university organized with Cleveland County Public Health, was the first opportunity for students to get the vaccine.
Joao Espinheira is a senior soccer player from Brazil, and he said he wouldn t have been able to get the vaccine in his home country until December 2021, at the earliest.
Things are a bit hard there and to get a chance to take this vaccine as early as April is really important for us to keep our lives going, Espinheira said. Hopefully soon, [my family are] all going to be vaccinated, and we re going to move on. ....

To help the flow of COVID-19 vaccines in Cleveland County, a recently-formed nonprofit is pledging $50,000 to the effort.
Hospice Cleveland County Foundation is making the donation to the Cleveland County Public Health Center to support the ongoing mass drive-thru COVID-19 vaccine clinics. The money will be used to support the infrastructure and logistics of the clinics, as well as an education campaign.
“Nothing epitomizes the mission of Hospice Cleveland County Foundation further than being able to help protect residents of Cleveland County from COVID-19, as vaccination plays a critical role in helping us all get back to normal,” said Emily Arey, executive director of the foundation. ....

A wave of coronavirus cases in Cleveland County after the Thanksgiving holiday has health officials preparing for another surge during the Christmas season.
