John Wilson, Tracy Besselaar die in Alabama prison


The Alabama Department of Corrections confirmed another two deaths inside its state prisons this week. 
John Wilson, 27, died in St. Clair Correctional Facility on Monday, July 19. Tracy Besselaar, 56, died at Fountain Correctional Facility the same day. 
ADOC confirmed the deaths after the Montgomery Advertiser received tips about the fatalities but would not release a cause of death pending a complete investigation.  
The fatalities are among at least 10 known deaths within Alabama prisons in July.
The U.S. Department of Justice is pursuing a lawsuit against the state and ADOC over widespread violence, mismanagement and staff abuses in its men s prisons around the state.  ....

How Birmingham's Derrick Ervin Went From Life Sentence to Life Saver

Growing up as the youngest of six siblings in Birmingham’s Collegeville community, Derrick Ervin had one hero his dad.
“He would wake up at two in the morning and [after work] be back in the community by six in the evening to organize a team-sports event,” said Ervin.
His father was his “Superman,” an important figure in Collegeville community and the representation of what manhood meant to Ervin. He would watch his dad get up in the early hours of the morning to drive a truck and return later in the day to coach and mentor children. When his dad died abruptly, Ervin was 10, and he had a difficult time squaring the death of his father with his belief in God. ....

Evan Miller, the Alabama prisoner whose plea before the U.S. Supreme Court gave hope to others across the nation of one day getting paroled for murders they committed as juveniles, won’t get that chance himself.
Lawrence County Circuit Judge Mark Craig on Tuesday afternoon re-sentenced Miller to life without parole for his capital murder conviction in the 2003 brutal slaying of Cole Cannon. Miller was 14 years old at the time. The hearing was held via Zoom with Miller appearing remotely from prison due to COVID-19 restrictions. ....
