AFSCME union pushes for more workers at ECI to combat ongoing assaults

WESTOVER, Md. – Those with the American Federation of State, County & Municipal Employees union are begging the state to hire more staff, to avoid more violent attacks at the Eastern Correctional Institution. A press conference was held by the AFSCME Thursday evening where members pushed the state to do something. “Make the necessary changes to ensure that people are going home in the same condition that they arrived at work,” says Patrick Moran, Council 3 President at AFSCME.
Those with the AFSCME say, they have finally had enough of the attacks on officers at ECI and they’re demanding change. “This could be life or death for my colleagues. What the administration has done is not enough, they must do more,” says Daniel Price, a Sergeant at ECI speaking on behalf of the union. ....

In light of recent reports that eight (8) prison officers and four (4) inmates have tested positive for COVID-19, can the Minister indicate what measures are being taken to safeguard both prison officers and inmates?
RESPONSE
Madam President, at the moment there are 3,802 inmates in the system. This system consists of 10 facilities (9 in Trinidad and 1 in Tobago).
Thankfully at present, we report a mere 8 COVID positive inmates and 17 COVID positive officers. The 8 inmates are in separate facilities from the general population at the Eastern Correctional and Rehabilitation Center (ECRC).
They are managed by the officers who are appropriately clad in full PPE gear. ....

Three Adirondack prison inmates sue state over COVID conditions


RAY BROOK — Three inmates at Adirondack Correctional Facility are suing the state — notably the governor and the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision — for allegedly endangering older inmates at the prison during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The plaintiffs are represented by attorneys employed by Relman Colfax PLLC and the Prisoners’ Rights Project of the Legal Aid Society. The Release Aging People in Prison Campaign joins them as a plaintiff.
The lawsuit alleges a “deliberate indifference” to the health and safety of inmates. It details a lack of testing, proper protective protocol and medical equipment. It says busing, meals and transfers are being conducted improperly. ....
