Affordable housing NJ: Ridgewood builds adult special needs apartments

A new affordable-housing site in downtown Ridgewood will open its doors to 16 adults with developmental disabilities by the end of the summer.
The 13,000-square-foot home has six independent living apartments and two group homes with communal kitchens, living rooms and laundry machines. It was all designed specifically for adults with special needs by Virgona & Virgona Architects, and has accessible features built in.
The planning began in 2018 for what was to be one in a series of affordable housing projects launched by the Bergen County United Way and Madeline Housing Corp. The two nonprofits have so far partnered on 34 affordable homes. ....

When the COVID-19 pandemic made indoor dining impossible in 2020, outdoor dining became crucial to keeping the food and dining industry alive. As restaurants looked to expand al fresco, towns and cities around New Jersey found a way to get them more space: blocking off streets to create pedestrian walkways.
The result was one of the few silver linings of the pandemic. Downtowns took on block party vibes. Streets once filled with cars were now lined with tables and customers. Floundering restaurants were given a much-needed life raft. ....
