IRELAND’S DECADE OF commemorations continues this year as the country remembers 1921, the final year of fighting in the War of Independence. 
The year of 1920 saw some of the most intense fighting and violence throughout the period. Much of what was planned to be commemorated last year was forced to be cancelled due to Covid-19 but some incidents were remembered.  ....

Laois Offaly TD Brian Stanley has apologised in the Dáil for tweets about IRA attacks and the Táinaist Leo Varadkar.
The Chairman of the Dáil Public Accounts Committee, who sat near his party leader, issued a personal statement in the Dáil on Tuesday, December 15.
He first addressed the tweet about the Narrow Water bomb in 1979 and the Kilmichael Ambush in 1920 which he had equated to lessons for slow learners. ....

Sinn Féin TD Brian Stanley has said he accepts that a tweet he sent about the Provisional IRA bombing at Narrow Water was insensitive and caused hurt and anger, and he was truly sorry for that.
Mr Stanley had tweeted that the ambush at Narrow Water in 1979 and the Kilmichael Ambush in 1920 were:  2 IRA operations that taught d elite of the British army and the establishment the cost of occupying Ireland. Pity they were such slow learners.
Speaking in the Dáil, the Laois-Offaly representative said people needed to be able to talk about the past in way that does not deepen division and must be respectful of all views. ....
