Elise Stefanik: The congresswoman Trump wants to replace Liz Cheney

WASHINGTON – After holding the position as the third-ranking House Republican for nearly three years, it is becoming clearer Rep. Liz Cheney s leadership role may be at risk as prominent Republicans line up against her for criticizing former President Donald Trump.
The person emerging as a potential replacement for the Wyoming Republican is Rep. Elise Stefanik, a New York Republican who in the last years of the Trump administration emerged as a loyal and vocal defender of the 45th president.
Stefanik, 36, now has the backing of the second most powerful House Republican, Minority Whip Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., and Trump.
Meanwhile, Cheney is under mounting criticism and scorn from Republicans over her statements regarding the former president. On Monday, she called his election fraud claim a big lie. ....

WASHINGTON – The vote Wednesday on Rep. Liz Cheney s future as a member of House Republican leadership was conducted by a voice vote behind closed doors.
Cheney was in the room when the vote to oust her as the chair of the House Republican Conference, the chamber s third most-powerful Republican, took place.
Under long-standing conference rules, votes were cast in a closed-door meeting by the members who physically show up to the morning meeting in the Capitol. No proxy voting is allowed. ....

Louis DeBroux: Attacks on Trump, GOP Lead to Cheney's Removal — The Patriot Post

The House Republican Conference met today and ousted conference chairwoman Liz Cheney (R-WY) from her leadership position. Her almost certain replacement will be Representative Elise Stefanik (R-NY). Cheney has no one else to blame, because this is thanks to a series of self-inflicted wounds.
Cheney, the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, has been a solid conservative, but her ability to lead the conference was badly damaged by her open attacks on President Donald Trump and her Republican colleagues who expressed concerns over fraud in the 2020 election. And while such attacks certainly make her the darling of Leftmedia talkingheads (who adore any Republican who disparages her fellow Republicans), she has created deep animosity toward her in the conference. ....

Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson on Tuesday said former President Donald Trump is dividing the GOP and indicated that Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney should not be removed from her post as conference chairwoman.
Hutchinson, a Republican and an outspoken Trump critic, threw his support behind Cheney after conservative leadership announced a closed-door vote to decide whether to oust her on Wednesday. Cheney voted in favor of moving forward with Trump s second impeachment trial following the Jan. 6 Capitol riot and has appeared to feud with the former president since he departed the Oval Office on Jan. 20. ....

Sen. Joni Ernst faulted cancel culture for the GOP s recent maneuver to remove Rep. Liz Cheney from her leadership post.
On Monday, the Iowa Republican said, There are those that are trying to silence others in the party, pointing to House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy s stated support for removing Cheney from her position following her frequent remarks critical of former President Donald Trump.
I feel it s OK to go ahead and express what you feel is right to express and, you know, cancel culture is cancel culture no matter how you look at it, Ernst told reporters when asked about Cheney s likely ouster. ....
