New Hampshire s Lakes region is dominated by the deliciously pronounceable Lake Winnipesaukee. But it was nearby smaller Squam Lake that gained fame 40 years ago with the release of the movie “On Golden Pond,” the second highest growing movie of 1981. “Raiders of the Lost Ark” came in first, but Indy takes some beating, even now.
The small town of Holderness, which wraps around Squam Lake’s western shore, doesn’t look much changed since Katharine Hepburn, Henry Fonda and Jane Fonda rolled in to shoot the three-time Oscar winning film. Big stars though they are, it was some local characters who stole many scenes: Squam Lake’s loon population, calling out in their eerily beautiful fashion, became overnight sensations. ....

Science center gives glimpses of wildlife in winter

HOLDERNESS â Winter is not fully here, but for the past three months animals in New Hampshire have been getting ready for it by going underground or putting on big, warm coats, says naturalist Margaret Gillespie.
Winter is a great time to be outdoors, and itâs an even better time to watch birds and other animals, said Gillespie, a 34-year staff member at the Squam Lakes Science Center in Holderness.
When the snow eventually covers the entire state, itâll serve as a storyteller for every creature that treads upon it â the tracks showing where the animals came from and where theyâre going, while their droppings provide clues about what theyâre eating and drinking, she said. ....

December 12, 2020ASHLAND At their Dec. 1 meeting, the Ashland School Board appointed Kelly Avery as the School Principal for the next school year, extended the Christmas vacation, discussed basketball, donations and next year s budget, and learned of school activities.
This school year, the Ashland School has been run by Associate Principal Kelly Avery and Interim Principal Steve Guyer. Formerly a teacher in the school, Avery has been taking classes needed to serve as the School s only principal in the next school year, and is now halfway through her required studies. At this meeting, Superintendent
Mary Moriarty formally nominated Avery to serve as the Principal from July 1, 2021 to June 30, 2022, noting that she has done an outstanding job. The School Board quickly and unanimously voted to appoint Avery to that position. ....
