As we mark the fifth centenary of the coming of the Christian faith to the Philippines, there is a need to assess what kind of Catholic Christianity has emerged as of now and what its prospects are for the future. It is important to explore how the Church in the Philippines can fulfil her mission both within the country and in foreign lands – especially in Asia, and in Europe and North America.
After 500 years, there are now over 90 million Catholics in the country. The Philippines has the third largest Catholic population in the world. The Church in the Philippines has more members than that of Spain and other European countries. It is significant that some Filipinos have been providing leadership to religious orders that used to send missionaries to this country.
