[OPINION] Between a rock and a hard place

[OPINION] Between a rock and a hard place

The Philippines, like so many other countries in this time of COVID-19, is caught in the worst of all possible worlds, or between a rock and a hard place. On one side is the greed of western governments that want to hoard most of the vaccines, and western pharmaceutical corporations that will do anything to keep complete control of their patents and charge poor countries sky-high prices for vaccines. On the other, bungling governments that can’t organize a decent, orderly program of vaccination.
Corporate greed
As my friend, the economist Jayati Ghosh, writes, “This vaccine grab by rich countries meant that most of the world would get safe and approved vaccines only in 2022, and in some cases not even until 2024. In mid-January 2021, the head of the World Health Organization (WHO) noted that while 39 million vaccine doses had already been administered in the rich countries…1 ....

[OPINION] Class struggle: On the history of Christianity in the Philippines

[OPINION] Class struggle: On the history of Christianity in the Philippines

2021 marks 500 years since Christianity came to the Philippines. As a predominantly Catholic country, the celebration of its quincentennial is very important and is inevitably tied to our nation’s whole history. But it is also a perfect time for us to not only celebrate, but also evaluate its legacy in our history and society.
According to patriotic historian Renato Constantino, Filipino [Christian] history is predominantly seen through the lens of Spanish and American historiography. During the nationalist ferment of the late 50s up to the early 70s, there were attempts to challenge these predominant views of history. These can be seen through works such as the 1946 pamphlet “Peasant War in the Philippines,” which was anonymously reprinted in the ....

[OPINION] Politics in review: Nothing 'beats' the Duterte administration

[OPINION] Politics in review: Nothing ‘beats’ the Duterte administration

It is almost 2022, and we already see signs that next year is an election year, what with the not-so-subtle campaign streamers of wannabes all around. Even if the candidate denies that he or she has intentions of running, the promo materials we see online and on the streets say otherwise.
I thought it was illegal to display campaign materials until it was election time. Why is this even allowed? Such illustrates the politics and “rule of law” that thrive in our country.
Before Martial Law, the political landscape in the Philippines was pretty much like that in the United States. Naturally because we were colonized by the Americans after we were a Spanish colony. That is why we have our Western education along with our Judeo-Christian religion. There were two predominant parties, the Nacionalista and Liberal, distinct from each other along plat ....

[OPINION] The new normal, 366 days later

[OPINION] The new normal, 366 days later

John Leo C. Algo
It has now been a full year since the Philippines entered a “new normal.” The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic forced the country to go on lockdown to limit the spread of the coronavirus, and it is a state in which it has remained to this day.
The Duterte administration s management of this crisis has been disastrous. While neighboring countries such as Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam have been successful in curbing the spread of COVID-19, the Philippines continues to record thousands of new cases on a daily basis, with no signs of slowing down. The economy is experiencing a recession, which is one of the worst among developing nations and whose impacts would be felt for years to come.  ....

A singalong was part of the launch.
A trust that was set up in 2018 has waited a long time for its official launch, which was held last month, on February 26.
The Kahikatea Music Therapy and Community Arts Trust’s main project is Sing Up Rodney therapeutic singing groups, held in Orewa and Warkworth. The singing sessions assist people with neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s or stroke by improving breathing and vocal strength and, for people with dementia, connecting favourite tunes with memories. The sessions are also a social outlet. ....
