Rotorua lakefront redevelopment provides safe haven for kōura 16 Feb, 2021 05:00 AM 3 minutes to read Freshwater scientist Dr Ian Kusabs. Photo / Supplied Rotorua Daily Post Kōura will have a new safe haven at Rotorua's lakefront thanks to a purpose-built habitat as part of the Rotorua Lakefront redevelopment project. It is hoped that baby kōura, which are the most vulnerable to predators, will flourish in their new habitat, which has large rocks and stones for them to hide from predators. The lakefront boardwalk will also provide essential shade. "The lakefront redevelopment project provides an opportunity to significantly improve the kōura habitat, and it's well timed because catfish, which prey on kōura, are now in Lake Rotorua," freshwater scientist Dr Ian Kusabs said.
