Tim Duncan’s legacy is secure Share this story Photo by D. Clarke Evans/NBAE via Getty Images As Tim Duncan gets ready to be inducted into the Hall of Fame, it’s inevitable to reflect on his career. What do you think is Duncan’s legacy? What will he be remembered for 20 years from now? Marilyn Dubinski: I think his legacy will always be that of a consummate professional and perfect franchise player that anyone would pick on one of those “build your own championship team” exercises: classy, unselfish, a quiet leader that every one wanted to play with, and of course one of the greatest power forwards of all time. However, I also think that if the five years since his retirement have been any indication, he will continue to be slightly underappreciated by non-Spurs fans and younger generations who did not see his prime, only know today’s more offensively-minded game, and underestimate the value of defense. ....
The Spurs’ play-in chances are still solid Share this story Scott Wachter-USA TODAY Sports Do you see any scenario in which San Antonio misses the play-in tournament? And do you think they could somehow get the eight seed? Marilyn Dubinski: Aside from not wining again in the regular season, I have a hard time seeing a scenario where the Spurs don’t make the play-in tournament (although it’s looking at least more possible with each passing loss). The Pelicans only have six games to lose three fewer games than the Spurs, who own the tie breaker. So even if the Spurs went just 2-5 the rest of the way I’d like to at least believe the Spurs can squeeze out two more wins New Orleans would have to go 4-2 to surpass them, and I don’t see four wins left on their remaining schedule. ....
The reasons for the Spurs’ impressive turnaround Share this story Ken Blaze-USA TODAY Sports After losing five straight to start April, the Spurs have now won seven out of the last 10 and five of their last six games. What’s the biggest reason for the turnaround, and is it sustainable? Marilyn Dubinski: I feel like there’s a few reasons to point to for the turnaround: the starters are starting and closing games much stronger, a slightly friendlier schedule (although the 9-game homestand before the current run was still friendly enough that they should have done way better than 2-7), and to that point, they’ve been on the road more than at home, where for some unexplainable reason they’ve just played better this season. Whether their current winning rate is sustainable or not with the remaining schedule remains to be seen. ....
