The west side of Cornelius ends in dozens of tiny peninsulas that spread across Lake Norman like tree roots through soil. The bedroom community north of Charlotte is only 15 square miles but boasts 75 miles of lakefront, likely the most of any North Carolina community.
Around a decade ago, locals noticed an uptick in the number of out-of-town guests booking homes through then-nascent rental platforms like Vrbo and Airbnb.
They weren t pleased.
“We’re not a vacation town,” said Frances Dawson, a realtor who lives in Cornelius. “The people who spent their good hard-earned money on these waterfront properties didn’t want to listen to loud music and 2 a.m. pool parties.” ....

State lawmakers consider removing communities' ability to regulate vacation rentals

State lawmakers may vote on legislation this week that would strip communities of the ability to regulate vacation rentals.
Weekend and week-long rentals have exploded in popularity in recent years, leading cities and small lakeshore towns to regulate where they are allowed and how many there can be.
Yarrow Brown is with Housing North. It’s a non-profit in northwest lower Michigan.
She says towns need to be able to make rules, otherwise there would be few year-round housing options for residents.
“We really believe this should be a decision that’s made locally because that is where the impact is and it’s different depending on your community, Brown said. ....

160D & Ordinance Updates: Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill have recently adopted text amendments to update their development ordinances to be consistent with the new NCGS Chapter 160D (information regarding 160D can be found here). New regulations include modified neighborhood meeting and public noticing requirements; clarifying minimum development application requirements; articulates how modifications to zoning applications are regulated, and clarifying vested rights and development standards to conform with Chapter 160D.
