Anti-Asian hate: How Brookline can respond

Susan Park / brookline@wickedlocal.com
A few years ago, Brookline parent Soyoung L. Kim was on a trip to Castle Island with her kids when a stranger began yelling at her over a parking issue.
The man didn t say anything racist, but what I knew in my gut in that moment was that he wouldn’t be yelling at me if I wasn’t Asian, Kim recalled.
Suddenly, a bystander intervened, stepping between the stranger and Kim and telling her, “I am going to stand here and protect you because I am uncomfortable with what I am seeing.”
Reflecting on the moment, Kim said the bystander s actions made her feel safer and comforted her during an upsetting moment.  ....

Like the rest of the country, I awoke on Wednesday, March 17 to the horrific news of a mass shooting in Atlanta that killed eight people. Six were Asian women, ranging in age from 44 to 74. I immediately went numb. Lulu Wang, the Chinese American filmmaker and director of
The Farewell, gave voice to my pain on social media: “I know these women. The ones working themselves to the bone to send their kids to school, to send money back home.”
The fact is, I’ve been in a state of numbness for much of the past year. On top of the unprecedented strains that COVID-19 has placed on all of us, Asian Americans like me have had to confront skyrocketing rates of discrimination, verbal assaults, and physical violence. We have been punched, shoved, stabbed, spat at, told that the pandemic is our fault, we brought it this country, and we should go back to whereve ....

Newton, Massachusetts, Jan. 20, 2021 William James College, in collaboration with the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), has created a guide for parents of adolescents of Asian descent to support the mental health of their children at a time when the outbreak of a coronavirus pandemic has fueled a rise in discrimination, xenophobia, and bullying against Asians.
Over 2,500 hate incidents against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders were recorded between mid-March and early August 2020, according to Stop AAPI Hate, a national coalition aimed at addressing anti-Asian American discrimination amid the COVID-19 pandemic. ....
