Ever since the pandemic-triggered shutdown of the restaurant industry began last March, there have been efforts aplenty to quantify the damage such public health mandates have caused.
Over the last 12 months various restaurant casualty headcounts have been developed. Some were based on anecdotal evidence while other tallies were derived from more substantive information. In a few instances figures generated to justify lobbying efforts in favor of restaurant relief have even turned out to be somewhat overstated.
Now better, more reliable information is beginning to emerge. Datassential, a market research firm that does work in the food service field, released its findings on restaurant shutdowns as of late March. Using numbers gleaned from Firefly, the firm’s proprietary database, Datassential reports that 10.2% of all restaurants in operation at ....

In 1993, so it could focus solely on school furniture, Columbia authorized another company to make bicycles.
“The company has a tradition of reinventing itself,” says Ali R. Salehi, president and CEO.
That tradition of reinvention was harnessed again during the COVID-19 pandemic. Columbia was faced with a decline in demand for school furniture as districts switched to remote learning and budgets tightened amid economic uncertainty.
“Volume took a major, major hit,” he explains. “School construction stopped or slowed.” And, school systems steered funding toward the purchase of personal protective equipment (PPE). ....

They’re the stuff of fast-food legend.
The “they” is McDonald’s original-formulation French fries. Made from fresh Russet potatoes and fried in beef tallow, the French fries served at McDonald’s restaurants in the 1960s and ’70s supposedly earned the praise of late 20th century food luminaries like James Beard and Julia Child.
Certainly today’s restaurant French fries aren’t often memorable. Industrially processed, flash frozen, and sometimes “coated” to give the product better “plate life,” the modern French fry is nothing like the “pommes frites” from which they are originally descended. ....
