Car drives into store in Spanaway, driver flees


The driver of a vehicle that crashed into a Payless Shoes is missing.

SPANAWAY, Wash. A car crashed into a Payless ShoeSource in Spanaway just before 2 a.m. Tuesday. 
Nobody was injured in the crash along 161st Street. The driver ran from the scene, according to Washington State Patrol.
According to state troopers, the car found inside the store was stopped by Pierce County deputies on Monday. The driver was cited for reckless driving. It is unclear if it was the same driver Tuesday morning.
About 40 minutes after the crash in Spanaway, police found a stolen vehicle on 136th Street that had been rolled and abandoned. Police believe the two crashes may be connected. ....

Lloyd Center is facing an existential crisis that has only intensified during the coronavirus pandemic as anchor tenants and signature businesses have departed en masse.
Ishmail Chorduky, the owner of Stitchworks Custom Embroidery, has operated two centrally-located kiosks at the Lloyd Center mall for almost a decade. From his post next to Lloyd Center’s iconic ice skating rink, Chorduky has witnessed the Northeast Portland mall’s rapid decline firsthand.
The mall lost Nordstrom in 2015. Sears and Marshalls then moved out in 2018. Lloyd Center’s problems only intensified last year amid the coronavirus pandemic as anchor tenants and signature businesses departed en masse. ....

BENNINGTON — Ocean State Job Lot is renovating the former J.C. Penney building here with plans to open a new store in April.
“It is under construction, and if all goes well we will open on April 8,” said Mark Swiderski, project manager for the multi-state chain, which now has 143 stores.
In advance of the opening date, the company is expected to post signs at the Bennington Square Shopping Center informing people how to apply for jobs.
A typical store in the Rhode Island-based chain has about 30 full and part-time employees, he said. ....
