Censorship doesn’t just stop at blocking freedom of expression. Banks and financial processors wield the power to halt one’s livelihood at the mere accusation of “hate speech.”
PayPal and Visa have blacklisted some users based on the content those users publish. ZeroHedge, a website where bloggers publish under the pseudonym Tyler Durden, posted a blog stating that the outlet was “deplatformed by PayPal.” PayPal’s move bullied ZeroHedge to change its donation section.
In a similar vein, social media platform Gab was reportedly blacklisted from Visa, according to one of the company’s blog posts. Visa blacklisted Gab for “promoting hate speech,” even though the company markets itself as a “neutral technology platform.” According to Gab, two banks also banned Gab “without cause,” citing “risk related reasons.” ....

The Southern Poverty Law Center took a devastating hit to its credibility and reinforced its reputation for unfairly wielding the “hate” label Monday by agreeing to pay millions of dollars to an organization previously included on a list of “extremists.”
In a stunning settlement, SPLC President Richard Cohen issued an apology and agreed to pay $3.375 million to the British-based Quilliam Foundation and founder Maajid Nawaz after they appeared in a since-deleted 2016 journalists’ guide to “anti-Muslim extremists.”
The agreement, reached after Mr. Nawaz threatened to sue, prompted the center’s many critics on the right to reissue calls for media outlets and companies, which include Google and Amazon, to stop relying on the center for neutral “hate group” assessments. ....
