Street Survivors' Holiday Donations Boost Local Charities | News, Sports, Jobs

Eight local charities received $300 donations each from the Ohio Valley Street Survivors Car Club over the holiday season, despite cancellations of a number of the club’s events in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Donation recipients included Grow Warwood Pride, Bridgeport Christian Fellowship Food, Bethlehem Apostolic Temple, Catholic Charities, Wheeling Area Training Center for the Handicapped (WATCH), Winter Freeze Shelter, The Soup Kitchen of Greater Wheeling and the Easter Seals Rehabilitation Center in Wheeling. Due to the pandemic, club officers were unable to meet with the representatives of each organization as they have in recent years and the donations were mailed to each agency. ....

WHEELING One of the most ambitious undertakings in Wheeling’s recent history took place this summer when city council acquired the former Ohio Valley Medical Center property.
During the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, city leaders had been working with the owners of the OVMC property along with state and federal officials to see if the vacant hospital campus could be used in the event a surge in cases of the virus would cause local hospitals to exceed their capacity. After it was determined those concerns would not likely be realized and the facility would not be needed for such an emergency backup scenario, city leaders continued to explore the possibility of acquiring the property. ....

YSS Winter Freeze Shelter Opens Doors at New Location | News, Sports, Jobs

WHEELING The first few days of Youth Services Systems’ Winter Freeze Shelter were somewhat slow. Yet with last Wednesday’s sudden snowfall and subfreezing temperatures forecast for the end of this week, that may change quickly.
The shelter opened its doors to the public earlier this week, seeing a slow first night. Communications Manager Betsy Bethel-McFarland suspects the slow start was due to a lack of public awareness, but anticipates that the change in weather will see more people come to the facility in short order.
Forecasts have low temperatures in Wheeling in the 20s starting Christmas Eve and into the new year. ....
