Online petition launched: Stop child marriage in PH


Multi-sector groups have joined forces to press for the abolition of child marriage in the Philippines.
They launched on Tuesday, May 11, an online petition on Change.Org and can be accessed via www.change.org/endchildmarriageph.
The petition was spearheaded by the Child Rights Network (CRN), the Philippine Legislators’ Committee on Population and Development (PLCPD), Plan International Philippines, and the nationwide coalition #GirlDefenders Alliance.
The groups called on Congress to pass a law that will repeal all laws, decrees, executive orders, issuances, rules, and regulations that legally allow the practice of child marriage.
So far, over 100 organizations, government agencies and officials, legislators, lawyers, health practitioners, personalities, and civil society advocates have already signed the petition. The list of signatories can be viewed through bit.ly/endchildmarriagesignatories. ....

Mexican Drug Cartels Use TikTok to Smuggle Migrants, Recruit Them for Crimes, Abbott Says


Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said Mexican drug cartels are using social media apps, such as TikTok, to smuggle migrants and recruit them to work in their illegal operations.
Abbott showed two TikTok videos to support his claims during a press conference on Thursday, according to a KLKNTV report.
Mexican drug cartels are trying to allure people with money, parties, boats, and fun but downplay the organizations criminal side, such as the murder. Greg Abbott noted that the cartels are not only smuggling drugs into Texas but also of people.
These are two pictures from TikTok. And these are ads or videos and things being run by cartels on TikTok, trying to recruit people in Texas to assist them to commit their crimes with the promise of money and other things, Abbott said. ....

Groups press Congress on 3 bills to address teenage pregnancy

The Child Rights Network (CRN) and the Philippine Legislators’ Committee on Population and Development (PLCPD) identified the proposed legislations as those on “Anti-Child Rape Bill,” “Prohibition of Child Marriage” and the “Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention.”
The two non-governmental organizations said that last Dec. 1, the House of Representatives approved on third and final reading House Bill 7836 which provides for stronger protection against rape, sexual exploitation, and abuse and increasing the age for determining the commission of statutory rape from below 12 to below 16 years.
They said HB 7836 “contains potent provisions which include increasing the age to determine statutory rape from below 12 to below 16, equalizing the protection for victims of rape, whether a boy or a girl, and the removal of marriage as forgiveness exemption where the perpetrator is freed of legal responsibility if the perpetrator marries the pe ....

International group denounces 'attacks' against indigenous people – Manila Bulletin

IPRI, a global group that initiates protection of indigenous peoples, cited the case of the 19 Lumad children who were taken by members of the Philippine National Police (PNP) from the Talamban Campus of the University of San Carlos in Cebu City on allegations that they were engaged in “warfare training.”
It said the Lumad children are now under the custody of the PNP, while seven others are detained and charged with kidnapping and serious illegal detention offenses.
It lamented that Lumad schools have long been attacked and threatened based on the government’s “baseless reports” linking them to terrorist groups. ....
