Prestigious annual pediatric medical device competition reveals five finalists
Five finalists have been named in the prestigious annual “Make Your Medical Device Pitch for Kids!” competition presented by the National Capital Consortium for Pediatric Device Innovation (NCC-PDI). Representing innovations in electrophysiology devices that treat congenital heart disease (CHD) and arrhythmias in pediatric patients, these five finalists now have access to a pediatric accelerator program led by MedTech Innovator and will compete for a share of $150,000 in grant funding from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the final virtual pitch event in September. The pediatric pitch event is part of the 9th Annual Symposium on Pediatric Device Innovation, co-located with the MedTech Conference, powered by AdvaMed.  ....

D.C.'s largest solar canopy unveiled at Children's National Research & Innovation Campus


At the event, District of Columbia Department of Energy & Environment (DOEE) Director Tommy Wells announced New Columbia Solar and Children’s National Hospital are 2021 District Sustainability Award co-recipients for the execution of this project, which will be recognized alongside other award recipients on April 28.
“I am pleased to celebrate this innovative, award-winning project, accomplished with our partners for the benefit of our residents and community,” said Wells. “The completion of this project by New Columbia Solar is a tremendous achievement that will not only help to meet Mayor Bowser’s climate and clean energy goals for the District, but will also help to reduce energy costs for low-income households. The District is proud to be a national leader in sustainability, and this project further demonstrates our commitment to deploying solar and developing scalable solutions in a way that prioritizes equitable access for all.” ....

Detecting rare disease: Revealing the methods, motivations, and implications

Dr. Summar is well-known for his pioneering work in caring for children diagnosed with rare diseases. He came to Children’s National Hospital in Washington, DC, in 2010 from Vanderbilt University and holds board certifications in both pediatrics and clinical genetics as well as biochemical genetics. At Children’s National, he leads the Division of Genetics and Metabolism, currently the largest clinical division of its kind in the world, overseeing 8,000 patients a year with rare diseases. His laboratory works on both devices and treatments for patients with genetic diseases while also supporting advancements in mainstream medicine through education about these disorders. His work has resulted in new drugs in U.S. Food and Drug Administration trials for patients with congenital heart disease and premature birth.
