Mental health associations praise 'step in right direction' for sector

Mental health professionals have welcomed the government’s relaunch of a strategy for the sector and the opening of a new ward at Mount Carmel Hospital as “a step in the right direction”.
The Alliance for Mental Health said it was encouraged by the efforts made by the health department’s mental health services unit to set up and develop the 10-bed Maria Sciberras ward at Mount Carmel, which is due to open soon.
The ward will treat female patients who have mental health issued related to drug use and has been equipped in line with international quality standards.
“This improvement will definitely ameliorate the patients’ experience within the psychiatric hospital, as well as that of the professionals and staff working there,” the Alliance said in a statement. ....

Tomorrow Is Maternal Mental Health Awareness Day

The Alliance for Mental Health and Development is to publish a Maternal Mental Health Advocacy Action Plan developed with the support of UK aid as part of a Maternal Mental Health Project.
The advocacy action plan aims at ensuring that poor and vulnerable women, including pregnant women, mothers, and their babies in Ghana have improved mental health and livelihoods.
This was in a statement signed by Mr Peter Badimak Yaro, Executive Director, BasicNeeds-Ghana and National Convenor – Alliance for Mental Health and Development, copied the Ghana News Agency, to mark Maternal Mental Health Awareness Day, which falls on 5th May 2021.
The event is meant to raise awareness, influence policy, and change attitudes towards maternal mental health issues. ....
