Juneteenth celebrations come amid culture war over race, voting rights

Talking about Juneteenth is a way to drive the history home that there was slavery.
At the same time, some states are trying to clamp down on voter rights.
And critical race theory, which explores slavery and racism s impact, is a new target of lawmakers.
In the wake of 2020 s racial reckoning over the killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery, the celebration of Juneteenth spread outside the African American community.
Juneteenth, a portmanteau of June and 19th, commemorates June 19, 1865 the date when Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger issued General Order No. 3, informing the Galveston, Texas, community that President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation freed enslaved African Americans in rebel states. It’s also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day. ....

Killeen council rejects resolution to fly Juneteenth flag at City Hall

The Killeen City Council on Tuesday voted unanimously against a resolution  that would have allowed the city to fly the Juneteenth flag at City Hall June 18-20.
The NAACP-Killeen Branch spoke out against the resolution during citizens comments, expressing concerns that it would open Pandora’s box and allow other flags to be flown at City Hall as well.
“Flying the Juneteenth flag would make it where other groups and organizations could make the same request of their flags to be flown. And yes, I’m even talking about the Confederate flag or the LGBTQ flag,” Samuel Powell said during citizens’ comments on Tuesday. Powell made the comments on behalf of NAACP-Killeen Branch President TaNeika Driver-Moultrie. ....

Randolph County Confederate statue's fate still uncertain

Following the racial protests of last year, some Asheboro residents are still wondering if anything will happen to the Confederate statue on the Randolph County Historic Courthouse property.
In July 2015, the NC General Assembly passed Senate Bill 22, the Historic Artifact Management and Patriotism Act, which prevents the removal of monuments such as the Confederate statue.
Although this legislature may have halted any immediate plans to relocate the statue it doesn t change the tumultuous history it has left behind.

Chip Foust, president of the Randolph County NAACP, said the county has a rich history of being anti-Confederate. During the lead up to the Civil War, there was a vote held and over 2700 citizens voted to stay in the United States, with less than 50 voting to join the Confederacy. ....
