Majority of Australians Support EV Policies, Including Subsidies for New Car Purchases

New research from The Australia Institute shows the majority of Australians support both a government policy subsidising the purchase of new electric vehicles and a ban on the sale of new fossil fuelled cars by 2035.
The Australia Institute surveyed a nationally representative sample of Australians about electric vehicle policies in January and March of 2021. The research is being released ahead of a briefing on transport emissions, hosted by the Parliamentary Friends of Climate Action in Parliament House today.
Key results:
Two in three Australians (62%) agree that the government should introduce subsidies for the purchase of EVs.
This includes 65% of Coalition voters and 64% of Labor voters. ....

GOLD PRICES retreated from new 2-week highs at $1740 in London on Wednesday, dropping $10 per ounce as government bond prices fell around the world, edging long-term interest rates higher ahead of today s monetary policy statement and forecasts from the Federal Reserve.
 
Commodities also fell, down 0.3% on Bloomberg s index, and global stock markets slipped after failing Tuesday to take out the record-high closing level on the MSCI World Index hit 1 month ago.

ASIC commences proceedings against Membo Finance over hardship requests
ASIC has commenced civil penalty proceedings in the Federal Court against Membo Finance Pty Ltd (Membo) and its sole credit representative Richmond Group Financial Services Pty Ltd (RGFS) for alleged contraventions of the National Consumer Credit Protection Act (the Act).
These proceedings include allegations of failures by Membo and RGFS to comply with the Act when borrowers experienced financial hardship. Protecting consumers from harm at a time of heightened vulnerability during the pandemic is a priority for ASIC.
Membo and RGFS carry on a credit business trading as ClearLoans, which provides loans between $3,000 and $15,000 on a 12 to 60-month term with a fixed interest rate of 43 per cent per annum. All loans are secured by a personal guarantee, usually given by a friend or relative of the borrower. In the event of default by the borrower, ClearLoans attempts collection from the ....

The total number of illegal aliens in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facilities has hit a “record low” in President Joe Biden’s first month in office, newly released data reveals.
Data collected by the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse at Syracuse University (TRAC) finds that ICE held just 13,529 illegal aliens in detention by the end of February — marking the lowest level of those in ICE detention.
Nearly all illegal aliens in ICE detention last month were in adult facilities, 13,190, while less than 340 were being held in facilities meant for family units. More than 4,700 of the illegal aliens in ICE detention are facing expedited removal from the United States while about 6,600 have a notice to appear before an immigration judge. ....
