The BBC Two reality show Win the Wilderness, which was later was picked up for streaming by Netflix, is the kind of program where everything that happened around its production is almost as compelling as what was filmed.
The concept is pretty easy to grasp, although unique. Duane and Rena Ose own a home that lies about 100 miles away from the nearest town, deep in the Alaskan wilderness. According to Decider, Duane Ose claimed the land that the house sits on in 1985 by hiking out and evoking the Federal Homestead Act of 1862, making him the last American to claim land under the law. However, due to their declining health, the Oses needed to move somewhere closer to fully staffed hospitals and decided to give their house up as a prize in a reality show, which came to be Win the Wilderness. ....

Alpha Phi Alpha Homes extends its community development reach into the Akron suburbs at places such as Friendship Terrace senior apartments in Cuyahoga Falls.
Fifty years ago, after urban renewal displaced thousands of low-income residents, alumni members of the University of Akron s chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha, the nation s oldest African American fraternity, broke ground on a 551-unit federally funded project that included a high-rise tower, townhouses and garden apartments.
Since that leap of faith by men who had no experience in construction and development, Alpha Phi Alpha Homes Inc., a nonprofit housing, development and management corporation, has overseen the construction of more than 2,400 units of senior and family housing in Akron and Northeast Ohio. ....

Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie, Louis Armstrong, Ray Charles and Duke Ellington have all performed in the Dreamland Ballroom at Taborian Hall, which has stood at Little Rock’s West Ninth St. for more than 100 years now. And this weekend, a lineup of local Black performers hits the stage for “The Dreamland Shakedown: A Celebration of Vintage Black Art.” The cabaret-style virtual variety show is hosted by Miki Gaynor and features live music from the Funkanites, vocalists DeeDee Jones and Ricky D Wade, comedy from Nate Williams and burlesque performances from Bastet Dafoe,Raven Rose and Maxie Fauna.   ....

Walter Palmer was living in a small two-story house in a section of West Philadelphia known as the Black Bottom in the late 1960s when Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. famously uncovered blatant housing discrimination in Chicago.
As King led marches through that city in protest of what he called the “de-facto segregation of the North,” Palmer played percussion in a jazz club down the block from his house and watched as the civil rights movement took hold in his neighborhood, an African American community that had thrived there since the 1800s despite the racism that coursed through the city, enforcing segregation and limiting mobility. ....
