A friend recently asked why I don’t incorporate much technical analysis (i.e. chart reading) into my investment process. For one, in theory, a weaker form of market efficiency is required for technical analysis to add value than fundamental analysis, assuming both are carried out with a similar level of competence. However, where possible, we try to be more practical than theoretical in this column. The paragraphs that follow summarize the comments I shared with my friend.
I think the concept of “Mr. Market” from Benjamin Graham is the best mental framework with which to approach the market. The idea is that Mr. Market is a highly intelligent person, whose opinion should be respected, but he tragically suffers from bipolar disorder. First, a look back at 2020.
The year 2020 was unexpectedly a year of severe and multiple crises.

The COVID-19 Coronavirus Pandemic hit the world and the Philippines like a giant sledgehammer. Global statistics show over 94 million COVID-19 cases, over 2 million deaths everywhere, comparisons with the 1918 Spanish Flu, and fears of a deadlier second wave.

30 business groups to petition for CREATE Bill passage – Manila Bulletin

At least 30 business organizations are signing a Joint Statement of Support calling for the immediate passage of the long delayed Corporate Recovery and Tax Incentives for Enterprises (CREATE) Bill with all the critical features to boost businesses and attract more investors into the country.
This was revealed by Aurelio “Gigi” Montinola during his inaugural address as new president of the Management Association of the Philippines after his oath taking and the new MAP Board by Inducting Officer, Finance Secretary Carlos G. Dominguez III.

Montinola said this as he outlined MAP’s policy directions during his term. For the economy, he said, MAP’s main immediate goal is to push for the passage of the CREATE Bill which will reduce Corporate Income Taxes to 20 percent for smaller businesses, establish 10-year sunset periods for specific incentive industries, and provide a much-needed P250 bil ....
