Fire burns Peterson Street home

A fire on Sunday afternoon tore through a home on Peterson Street, leaving it "heavily damaged" and unoccupied as of Monday, according to the Ketchikan Fire Department's acting fire chief.
All people living in the building escaped unharmed, but a dog and a cat are believed to have perished in the fire.
Multiple people called to report the fire on Sunday afternoon, said Acting Fire Chief Scott Brainard, including Sonya Skan, the only resident who was home when the fire broke out.
In a Monday evening phone interview with the Daily News, Skan, a former Ketchikan School Board member, said she lived at the home with her husband, Norman Skan and two grandkids. She had just awoken from a nap on Sunday when she noticed smoke.

Two Ketchikan residents were left devastated after a house fire Sunday afternoon. No humans were injured, but two pets were lost, and the home is uninhabitable.

Sunday afternoon, Sonya Skan said she woke up from a nap to the smell of smoke. She ran out of her house, grabbing two of her pets and not much else. When she tried to go back for her other dog and cat, she said she couldn’t get back in — the home was already full of smoke.

MILL rate hike on Council agenda

The Ketchikan City Council on Thursday at its regular meeting is set to decide whether to approve an increase of the city’s property mill rate from 6.6 mills to 6.7 mills in addition to considering approval of an emergency ordinance extension and an amended emergency ordinance.
Raising the mill rate by 0.1 mill, according to a memo written by City Manager Karl Amylon, would generate an additional $86,888 in property tax revenue. That increased revenue, however, would still fall short by $19,472 of the $5.84 million that was projected to be collected when the 2021 general operating and capital budget was adopted.
The council has two proposed motions to choose between, one that would adopt a resolution that maintains the mill rate at 6.6 mills and one that increases the rate to 6.7 mills.

CITY eyes funds for tourism plan

The Ketchikan City Council in its regular meeting Thursday will consider approving spending $20,000 to co-fund a Community Tourism Strategy Project with the Ketchikan Gateway Borough Planning Department.
According to a memo written by Assistant City Manager Lacey Simpson and attached to Thursday’s meeting agenda, the council in its June 20, 2019 meeting approved the expenditure of the $20,000 for the program, but it was set aside when the COVID-19 challenges arrived and the money was not spent.
According to information written by Borough Planning Director Richard Harney and included in the agenda packet, the borough approved $80,000 to support the program.
Harney wrote, “As the ships will begin sailing again, the strategy is ready to be pursued.”
