Hill nominates SA chief policy adviser to executive vice president

Student Association President Brandon Hill nominated SA Chief Policy Advisor Catherine Morris to be his executive vice president, pending senate approval, he announced to senators Wednesday.
Hill nominated SA Sen. Kate Carpenter, U-at-Large, to the position Monday, but her nomination did not gather the two-thirds vote needed to secure the role. Morris previously served as a vice chair and aide for the finance committee and as a Columbian College of Arts and Sciences undergraduate senator, which Hill said allowed her to gain a “broad set of experiences.”
“Her legislative, advocacy and administrative skills will serve as an asset to the senate,” Hill said. “I have absolute confidence in Morris’ skills to lead the senate and will work closely with her on managing our divided chamber.”

Hill said he was aware that some senators began to “whip votes” and make “backdoor deals” to block Carpenter’s nomination before she had her time to present her case for the EVP position.
The Student Association Senate rejected the nomination of SA Sen. Kate Carpenter, U-at-Large, to serve as executive vice president for the remainder of the body’s term at its meeting Monday.
SA President Brandon Hill selected Carpenter, who is also a Hatchet photographer, to fill the vacant position after he ascended to the presidency last month. After members of the senate posed several questions to Carpenter and held an almost hourlong private executive session to discuss her selection, Carpenter did not receive the required two-thirds majority vote to be confirmed, gathering about 55 percent of the vote.

Year in review: Defining photos of 2020
Protests, Zoom meetings and a quiet campus defined the calendar year for GW.
The Hatchet’s photo team looked through images that captured some of those significant moments throughout 2020. From demonstrations over racial injustice to celebrations in Foggy Bottom after former Vice President Joe Biden was elected as the next president, here are some of the most memorable shots of the year:

SA Senate votes to allow write-in candidates to send statement for runoffs

The JEC released an opinion during the 2019 SA election forbidding write-in candidates from submitting a photo and purpose statement, according to the bill.
The Student Association Senate voted to update election procedures at its last meeting of the semester Monday, allowing write-in candidates in runoff elections to submit additional information on the ballot for voters’ consideration.
The senate action grants any write-in candidate the ability to submit a profile photo and campaign statement if they advance to a runoff election in any opposed senate race. Senators also approved legislation encouraging professors to conduct their courses via Zoom instead of other virtual platforms because of student preferences, dismissed a senator for a lack of attendance at meetings and confirmed two members to the Joint Elections Commission, the body that oversees SA elections.
