Escondido restaurant owners prepare for more people dining out in orange tier

Escondido restaurant owners prepare for more people dining out in orange tier

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) — Now that San Diego County has entered the orange tier, restaurants can allow more people to dine inside.
Restaurants can offer indoor dining at 50 percent capacity, with a maximum of 200 people.
In Escondido, many people took advantage of the 70-degree weather Wednesday, continuing to mostly be seated outside during the lunch rush.
At H Brothers, an Escondido restaurant owned by brothers Nick and Justin Hedayati, 50 percent capacity is the equivalent of about 25 people inside.
“We can still fit our larger groups in here, and we have our tables set up so we can move them around how we need it,” said Nick Hedayati. “People still want to eat outside because it’s so nice.”

What the Hill and Carpenter administration must focus on

The Class of 2025 has not even seen campus. Many students dropped school for the academic year. And all students returning to a hopefully in-person fall semester have had much of their college experience ripped out from under them.
The Student Association has a major responsibility to reintegrate students into campus life, but as it stands, a lot of people understandably don’t trust the organization, and many others feel excluded from it.

If the University returns fully in person this fall, the newly elected SA leaders must prioritize welcoming students back from the minute they start their roles.

Junior and current Student Association President Brandon Hill will remain in the position for a full academic year.
Hill, the former SA executive vice president who originally ascended to the presidency in January, was elected to the SA’s top spot in the organization’s first fully virtual election season. He ran on a platform to add more positions to the executive branch and improve student inclusivity in the SA.
“I’m thankful for all the support and love that the campaign has received thus far,” Hill said. “I’m thankful to all the voters, even those who didn’t vote for me, for doing their civic duty. But I look forward to earning their votes throughout the academic year.”

A Student Association senator announced her candidacy for SA executive vice president Monday, planning to advocate for stronger mental health services and improved community relationships among SA senators.
SA Sen. Kate Carpenter, U-at-Large and a Hatchet photographer, said she plans to work with administrators, student organizations and students to improve access to mental health care and menstrual products on campus and increase school spirit. She said her experiences serving on five SA committees and caucuses, including a group updating the SA constitution and bylaws, and her involvement in organizations across campus have prepared her for the role.

SA Senate approves Morris as EVP

Morris said she is looking forward to continue advocating for students during the remainder of the term, "in a time when students need it the most."
The Student Association Senate confirmed Catherine Morris, the senate’s chief policy adviser, as executive vice president in a special senate meeting Sunday.
SA President Brandon Hill presented SA Sen. Kate Carpenter, U-at-Large and a Hatchet photographer, last week as his pick for executive vice president after he ascended to the presidency and left the EVP spot open, but the senate rejected his nomination. Morris said she learned “what is possible in the SA,” like advising on legislation and facilitating meetings with administrators, while working under the “phenomenal leadership” of Hill and former SA EVP Amy Martin, who held the position in the 2019-20 school year.
